Regarding the English country estates I think a case could be made for preservation rather than cannibalism. Societal changes passed by the era of top heavy grand homes that required a staff of "in service" maids, valets, cooks, gardeners, etc as recently dramatised by Masterpice Theatre's Downton Abbey.
