Images of the Architecture of Theodore Link

An exhibition of photographs by architect Gary Tetley is currently on display at the Carolyn Hewes Toft Gallery at Architecture St. Louis. While the photos document the richly ornamented facades and detailing of the buildings of Theodore Carl Link they are beautifully composed works of art in themselves. Link is best known for St. Louis' Union Station but he also designed a long list of churches, homes and other local buildings including two pavilions at the 1904 World's Fair. In his remarks at the exhibit opening Tetley explained that "Link hired the best artisans available to detail his buildings." Through his scholarship as well as his photographs Gary is likely the foremost authority on Link's architecture. According to the exhibtion catalogue he has documented many Link buildings in Mississippi and other states, contacted Link's relatives and spent countless hours in local and out-of-town archives. Interestingly Gary says that Theodore Link served as vice-president of the St. Louis Artists' Guild in 1905. The exhibit is on display through Jan. 8, 2010. Artisan's Section Meeting, Thurs, Oct. 8, 7pm

I am looking forward to Thursday evening's Artisans' Section meeting at the Emerson Gallery at the STL Artist's Guild, Two Oak Knoll Park, Clayton, MO. The featured speaker will be Dan Belcher. As a landscape architect and artisan Dan has created many beautiful ornamental planters and containers for gardens. He has also designed sculptures, way-finding monuments, fountains and decorative elements for a variety of urban planning projects. And his claim to fame is his success as an award-winning sand sculptor. His amazing sand-sculpting projects span the globe including sculptures in Italy and Japan. The links below are to Dan's website and a news story about a competition he won in Washington state last summer. I hope to see many artisans and fellow artists' guild members there for Dan's digital slide presentation and talk.. Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no charge. As usual a short business meeting for the section members will follow the presentation. We will discuss website progress, the Gallery Golf project and catch up with recent activities and accomplishments of our members. If section members would like to add an item to the agenda please email me. Mike Anderson, Artisans' section chair, mike@michaelandersonstudio.com

Congratulations are in order to woodworkers Vic Barr and Boris Khechoyan. Vic's wood sculpture fashioned from a gunstock was included in the recent juried show, Recycled Tendencies, on the second floor of the Artists' Guild. Using Google Sketchup

The finished poster shown above utilized a Google Sketchup model as a base for my watercolor painting. I described the modeling process in the post below:
I have been asked to deliver a presentation for the Creative Artisans Guild section at the St. Louis Artists' Guild at 7 pm Thurs, March 12, 2009. I plan to show slides of my architectural illustration work and demonstrate how I use Google Sketchup to create illustrations of unbuilt projects for architects and designers. Currently I am developing the art for the 2009 Art On The Square poster. Although I can't reveal the finished art until after the preview event for festival prepurchase patrons I can show the work I have completed in Sketchup that serves as reference for the painting. The first step: Google Earth photo of Belleville, IL historic square is imported into a Sketchup file.

Step 2: On a separate layer I modeled 100 art fair tents and a massing model of an adjacent building.

Detail: Zoom in on the model progress.

Next step: Model the fountain and begin adding scale figures from the library of components that includes people, transportation, architectural elements, landscaping, etc.

Next Step: Add flags, more people and other adjacent buildings.

This aerial view shows the massing of county courthouse.

This view zooms in on the fair and I feel like I am close to what I need to begin painting some some small color sketches which will I share in a future post. I hope to see you at the St. Louis Artists' Guild. -ma
