Images of the Architecture of Theodore Link

An exhibition of photographs by architect Gary Tetley is currently on display at the Carolyn Hewes Toft Gallery at Architecture St. Louis. While the photos document the richly ornamented facades and detailing of the buildings of Theodore Carl Link they are beautifully composed works of art in themselves. Link is best known for St. Louis' Union Station but he also designed a long list of churches, homes and other local buildings including two pavilions at the 1904 World's Fair. In his remarks at the exhibit opening Tetley explained that "Link hired the best artisans available to detail his buildings." Through his scholarship as well as his photographs Gary is likely the foremost authority on Link's architecture. According to the exhibtion catalogue he has documented many Link buildings in Mississippi and other states, contacted Link's relatives and spent countless hours in local and out-of-town archives. Interestingly Gary says that Theodore Link served as vice-president of the St. Louis Artists' Guild in 1905. The exhibit is on display through Jan. 8, 2010.
